when do you know its time to ditch the monolith for microservices?

I've noticed everyone's talking about microservices, and it sounds pretty cool. But when does all the hassle of splitting up a big old system actually become worth it? What are the real signs you should make the switch, instead of just putting up with the problems you already have?
