cache eviction policies, like LRU, LFU, or maybe something else

So, I've been pondering caching and, you know, when to kick stuff out. LRU is everywhere, right, but I've noticed that sometimes LFU or even just timing things out actually works better, depending on how things are being used. Like, if something's hot for a bit and then totally forgotten, LRU might hang onto it when it shouldn't. Anyone else tried other ways to evict things, or found real-world examples where LRU isn't the go-to?
