api gateway: centralized vs. decentralized for microservices?

hey folks, thinking about api gateway patterns for microservices. we've traditionally used a centralized gateway to handle concerns like auth, rate limiting, and routing. but as our service count grows, i'm wondering if a decentralized approach, where each microservice or a small group of services has its own gateway, might be more scalable and manageable. what are your thoughts? have you encountered issues with either pattern, or have best practices for deciding which way to go
