so, when should you just give up on your relational database?

hey folks, been wrestling with some scaling challenges lately. We're hitting limits with our current relational setup, and I'm wondering when others have made the call to move away from traditional SQL. What were the pain points that made you consider NoSQL or other data stores? What was your tipping point, and what did you switch to?
