when should api clients handle retries?

hey everyone, i was just pondering api client error handling, you know? specifically, when it's just a flaky network connection or the service is down for a bit, should the api client try to retry automatically, or is that something better handled on the server, or maybe some middle layer thing. what do you all think about the pros and cons of each approach
