database sharding strategy for growing user base?

so, our user base is growing like crazy and our main relational database is starting to feel it. we're thinking about sharding our user data, but i'm not sure what the best way to begin is. vertical or horizontal sharding, or maybe a mix of both? what's your experience been with starting sharding, and what should we avoid as we keep growing
