rate limiter in-memory versus distributed

hey everyone, im looking into implementing rate limiting for a new service and trying to decide on the best approach. Should I go with an in-memory solution for simplicity, or is a distributed approach using something like Redis necessary from the start? What are the trade-offs you've seen in production?
