how do u handle schema evolution in microservices

hey every1 im thinkin a lot bout schema evolution lately, esp as our microservice arch grows. when services own their data, and we need to change a db schema (add a col, change a type), how do you manage that without breakin downstream consumers? do u rely on backward compatibility? use schema registries? version ur apis aggressively? curious bout ur strategies and any pain points uve encountered
