when do you actually need message queues tho

hey ppl, im tryin to scale a service and we keep runnin into issues with direct sync calls between microservices. were thinkin about adding a message queue, like kafka or rabbitmq. whats your experience been like with that? wen did u first decide it was time to stop direct comms and go async? any specific metrics or situations that screamed 'now is the time'
