when to denormalize your database

were hitting some performance bottlenecks with our highly normalized OLTP database. Reads are getting slower as our tables grow and joins become more complex. im considering denormalizing some parts of the schema to speed up common queries. has anyone else gone down this path? what were your experiences? what are the trade-offs you found most significant, especially concerning data consistency and write performance?
