gRPC vs REST for inter-service communication: our migration experience

we just finished migrating about 15 core services from rest to grpc for inter-service communication, and it's been a mixed bag. on the one hand, we've seen a noticeable 40% reduction in p99 latency for some critical paths, which is great. protobufs for strict schema definition are also a win. on the other hand, debugging has become significantly harder without easy `curl` commands, and managing proto definitions across a dozen different repositories is a constant headache. we've invested heavily in tooling, but it still feels clunky. for those who've made the switch, did you find the performance and schema benefits outweighed the operational and developer experience challenges? are there any best practices for proto management in a large organization?
