Whiteboard vs diagramming tools: tips for remote system design interviews?

Remote system design interviews are the norm now, but the tooling for whiteboarding can still feel clunky. I've used Excalidraw, Miro, Google Jamboard, and some internal tools, and each has its pros and cons. The challenge is balancing a clean, readable diagram with the need to quickly sketch ideas and iterate while talking. Do you have any tips for making remote diagramming smoother? Is it better to have a few pre-drawn components ready, or build everything from scratch? How do you ensure you're not spending too much time drawing and not enough time discussing the actual design? I'm also curious about strategies for effectively sharing and iterating on diagrams in real time with the interviewer.
