So, how do you deal with API versioning without making a mess?

hey everyone im working on a pretty new service and were starting to think about api versioning ive seen a few ways people do it like putting the version in the url for example v1 users or using custom headers what are your experiences with diff versioning strategies whats good and bad about them esp when it comes to backward compatibility and how easy it is for clients to migrate looking forward to hearing your thoughts
