database connection pooling essential or overkill

hey everyone, im trying to get a better handle on when database connection pooling is really a must-have versus a nice-to-have. ive seen it recommended everywhere, especially for web apps, but im curious about specific scenarios where the performance benefits truly outweigh the added complexity. For smaller, less traffic-intensive applications, is it still worth setting up? what are your experiences and benchmarks?
