Load Balancers: How do you usually handle them?

were lookin at our load balancing setup bc were scaling microservices. we use aws elb but are thinkin about other stuff like nginx plus or haproxy for more control. when do you think its time to stop using cloud providers solutions? what do you look for when picking different load balancers or configs for sites with tons of traffic
