when should you think about distributed tracing?

so, i've been thinking about observability a lot lately. we have logging and basic metrics, sure, but i'm starting to feel like i'm flying blind when debugging problems that hit more than one service. when did you all start looking into distributed tracing? what were the pain points that pushed you to adopt it. any specific tools or strategies you found particularly helpful when getting started
