API Gateway: Centralized versus Decentralized?

Hey everyone, I've been thinking a lot about API Gateway patterns lately, especially as we scale our microservices. You know, we've seen how great it is to have one spot for auth, rate limiting, and routing requests. But with more and more services popping up, I'm wondering if a totally central gateway is becoming a bottleneck, or even its own kind of monolith. What are your experiences with decentralized API Gateways, where each service or a few services share a gateway? When did you find that tradeoff actually made sense, or when did you decide to stick with the centralized way? I'd love to hear your thoughts and any war stories you've got. Thanks!
