when does distributed tracing become essential

hey all, ive been thinking about observability lately. weve got logging and metrics covered, but im wondering at what point distributed tracing really moves from nice-to-have to absolutely necessary? is it tied to microservice count, traffic volume, or something else entirely? curious to hear your experiences and thresholds for implementing it.
