when should you consider a feature flag system

we've been kicking around the idea of introducing feature flags into our development workflow. it seems like a good way to decouple deployments from releases and allow for gradual rollouts or quick rollbacks if something goes sideways. what's your experience? at what point in a project's lifecycle or team size does a feature flag system become a must-have rather than a 'nice-to-have'?
