api gateway when is it overkill

hey folks ive been workin w microservices lately n were at the point where were considerin introducin an api gateway weve got a few services and direct client to service communication is becomin a bit unwieldy however im wonderin if theres scenarios where an api gateway might be more complexity than we actually need are there specific traffic volumes service counts or architectural patterns where itd advise against a gateway or at least hold off on it whats ur experiences w this
