when to adopt a cqrs pattern

ive been seeing Command Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS) mentioned more and more. it seems powerful for separating read and write operations, especially in complex domains or when scaling is a major concern. but it also adds complexity with separate models and potentially different data stores. what are your experiences with CQRS? when did you find it beneficial versus when did it become overkill?
