When should you use GraphQL instead of REST?

hey folks, i'm trying to wrap my head around the best practices for api design. we're building a new service and need to decide on the core api pattern. we've used rest extensively in the past, but graphql seems to be gaining a lot of traction. what are your thoughts on when one is clearly superior to the other? are there specific use cases or project types where you'd strongly recommend one over the other? looking forward to hearing your experiences
