whens it okay to ditch eventual consistency

i've been looking at a few systems lately, and it seems like eventual consistency was just the default setting, especially for distributed stuff. we're getting some user complaints about seeing old data, and it made me wonder: when is eventual consistency actually okay, and when should we really aim for stronger consistency, even if it slows things down a bit? what do you think helps figure out when to make that switch?
