when is api gateway too much

Hey folks, I'm working on a project where we're thinking about an API Gateway. we're a pretty small team and our microservice setup is pretty simple right now. we have a few services talking to each other, but it's not too complicated yet. i'm wondering when an API Gateway starts to be more trouble than it's worth? are there certain traffic patterns or team sizes where you'd say 'maybe skip the gateway for now'?
