so, when do you really need an api gateway, anyway?

hey everyone, i'm trying to figure out when we should add an API gateway to our setup. we're still a monolith, but it's getting tough to handle things like auth, rate limiting, and logging consistently. should we wait, or start getting ready for it now? i'm curious about when you guys decided it was the right time to bring in an API gateway.
