How do you handle distributed tracing with all those microservices? What's your approach?

so, I'm trying to get my head around distributed tracing. our microservice setup is getting super complicated, and it's a real pain to find where performance issues or errors are happening across all the different calls. what tools or ways of doing things have worked best for you to trace requests all the way through? do you like a certain open-source tool, or did you guys make your own? and how do you deal with the extra work it creates
