when should you think about building your own metrics system?

hey everyone, i'm trying to figure out when it makes sense to move away from off-the-shelf monitoring tools like Prometheus or Datadog and build something custom. we've hit some pretty specific performance bottlenecks that are hard to model with existing solutions. has anyone else gone down this road? what were the tipping points for you? was it worth the engineering effort
