when should you introduce a cdn?

i've been seeing a lot of discussions lately about when to introduce specific architectural patterns. one that hasn't come up yet is content delivery networks. we've been noticing increased latency on our static assets, and i'm wondering when others have found it a good time to pull the trigger on a cdn. what were the pain points that led you to adopt one, and what were the benefits you saw
