api gateway pattern, centralized or decentralized?

Hey folks, been thinking about API gateways lately. We're growing, and managing external access is becoming complex. I've seen both centralized gateways (one big one for everything) and decentralized ones (each microservice team manages their own gateway instance). What's your experience? When have you found one approach works better than the other? Curious about the trade-offs regarding team autonomy, operational overhead, and consistency.
