data partitioning for big data

Hey everyone, I've been trying to figure out the best way to partition really big datasets for our analytics stuff. Right now, I'm just using a date partition, but queries are getting slow as we add more and more data. Has anyone used fancier partitioning, maybe with multiple keys or something adaptive? I'd love to hear what worked for you, and what to avoid.
