When should you actually use a service mesh

So, I've been noticing a lot more chat about service meshes lately, you know, things like Istio and Linkerd. They seem to handle a bunch of common issues like retries, circuit breaking, and observability. But it still feels like a lot of extra work for smaller projects. When have you guys found a service mesh to be truly helpful, and what did you have to give up to get there?
