Real-time notifications: WebSockets or Server-Sent Events?

hey ppl, been thinkin bout doin real-time notifs for this new thing. we gotta push updates from the server to clients right away, like, instantly. my main thoughts are on websockets and server-sent events, or SSE. websockets seem like they can do more stuff bc they go both ways, but SSE feels way easier if were just sending data one direction. any strong feelings or did you actually use these? what worked and what didnt when you did this kinda thing
