cqrs when is it overkill and when is it essential

ive seen lots of chat bout CQRS lately, and it seems powerful for separating read and write concerns, esp in complex domains. but sometimes it feels like bringing a bazooka to a knife fight. for simpler CRUD apps, the overhead might just not be worth it. anyone got clear examples or criteria for when CQRS really shines, versus when its just adding unneccesary complexity
