cache stampede prevention strategies?

hey folks, i was just thinking about cache stampedes. you know, when a popular cached thing expires, and like a million requests all hit the origin server at once, it can totally tank performance. what have you guys found that works to stop that? i've seen stuff like locking, but that seems kind of complicated. are there easier ways, maybe something more built for the cloud, to deal with this?
