caching strategies for high traffic apis

our main user data API is getting hammered. we put in some basic rate limiting, but i'm thinking about adding caching too. what's your favorite way to cache API responses when you have a bunch of microservices with lots of traffic? are you using something like Redis or Memcached, or maybe a CDN for some of the pages? what problems have you run into with that
