dont you hate it when you have to figure out when to use message queues for microservices?

Hey everyone, I've been dealing with microservices for a bit now, and we're running into some trouble. Direct, synchronous communication between services is starting to really hurt our performance and make things too tightly coupled. I'm considering adding a message queue, maybe Kafka or RabbitMQ, for async communication. But I'm wondering if it's too much for where we are right now, or if it's something we should just get ahead of. When did you guys start using message queues with your microservices, and what were the good and bad things you noticed?
