so, when do you really start thinking about a reverse proxy

Lately, I've been dealing with a few projects, and this whole reverse proxy thing keeps coming up. We've already used them for load balancing and SSL termination. But I'm wondering when you all decide it's time to add one into the mix. Is it just for scaling, or do you have other signs you watch for before putting that extra layer in?
