Database Connection Pooling: Overkill or Essential?

hey everyone, i've been thinking a lot about database connection pooling lately. for small projects, it sometimes feels like a bit of unnecessary complexity. but for high-throughput applications, it seems absolutely critical. what's your general approach? do you implement connection pooling by default, or only when you see performance issues, and are there any gotchas i should be aware of when setting it up
