async versus sync communication for microservices, what are the pros and cons?

hey all ive been thinking a lot about how different services in our architecture communicate weve got a mix of synchronous rest calls and asynchronous message queues while async is great for decoupling and resilience sometimes a synchronous request is just simpler to implement and reason about curious to hear your experiences when do you find yourself leaning towards sync and when is async clearly the better choice what are the trade-offs you consider most important
