When should you think about using multi-region active-active for your app

ive been thinking a lot about disaster recovery and high availability lately, were running most of our services in a single aws region and while we have backups and some failover strategies the thought of a complete regional outage is always there, im curious to hear from others who have implemented multi-region active-active setups, what were the key drivers for that decision, what were the biggest challenges in terms of data consistency network latency and operational complexity, are there specific application types where this pattern is almost a must-have or is it usually a niche requirement
