When do database read replicas become a bottleneck?

hey everyone im thinking about read replicas lately weve been scaling up a service that gets tons of read traffic and read replicas seem like the obvious next step but im wondering when do the read replicas themselves start causing problems is it usually the network between the main server and the replicas the load on the replicas or something else really curious to hear what you guys have experienced and learned
