when should you use a CDN for static assets, you know

so, i've been wondering when we should actually get a cdn for our static stuff, you know, images, css, js. we're getting some serious traffic lately, and i'm not sure if a cdn is the first thing we should do, or if we should try other optimizations first. what do you guys think? when did you see a cdn really help your apps
