When should you pick a relational database over a document one for event sourcing?

hey everyone, i'm wrestling with a common problem: event sourcing. we're looking at storing application events, and the usual suspects are relational (like PostgreSQL) and document databases (like MongoDB). on one hand, relational DBs offer ACID compliance and strong consistency, which seems great for critical event data. on the other, document DBs might offer more flexibility for evolving event schemas. what are your experiences? when did you lean towards one over the other for event sourcing, and what trade-offs were most significant in your decision?
