API Gateway or direct service calls, what do you prefer?

hey folks, been thinking about microservice architectures lately. when you've got multiple services talking to each other, are you generally putting an API Gateway in front of everything, or are you okay with services calling each other directly? i've seen benefits to both, but want to hear what others are doing and why. what are your go-to patterns for managing inter-service communication
