when do you actually need to build your own ORM?

hey folks, been thinking about database interactions lately. we all use orms like sqlalchemy or prisma for convenience, but ive run into a few situations where the orms abstraction felt like it was fighting me, leading to inefficient queries or complex workarounds. are there specific scenarios where the overhead of fighting an orm outweighs the benefits of building a lighter, more tailored data access layer? whats your experience with custom data access code vs off-the-shelf orms
