when should you add a message queue to your system?

hey folks im tryin to figure out the tipping point for when a message queue actually helps more than it hurts. were dealin with several independent services that need to communicate asynchronously, and right now its mostly point to point direct calls with some basic retry logic. ive seen queues used for decoupling and resilience, but also heard they can add operational overhead. what are your experiences? when did you find a message queue became a necessity rather than just another thing to manage
