What's your go-to for tracing distributed requests?

lately, i've been trying to figure out how requests move between our different microservices. it's kind of a black box right now. i've checked out tools like Jaeger and Zipkin, but i'm wondering what everyone else is using in production and what the downsides are. are there particular ways to set things up that make tracing simpler. what have you found
