When do you actually need to shard a database?

we're seeing our primary database hit some pretty high write loads, and i'm starting to think about sharding. for those who have implemented it, at what point did you decide it was the right move? what were the key indicators that it was no longer just a scaling problem, but a structural one needing sharding
