When should you switch from a monolith to microservices?

we're running this big ol' monolithic app and its really starting to hurt. dev speed is dropping off, deploying is basically a coin flip now, and trying to scale just one part of it is a total headache. we're considering breaking it into microservices, but man, that feels like a HUGE project. what made your team say
