Multi-region database failover, is it really worth all the trouble?

We're trying to figure out how to set up a database that works across multiple regions. The main goal is to keep things running even if one region has an outage. Active-passive and active-active setups are the usual ideas. But honestly, the whole data replication, dealing with conflicts, and making failover smooth sounds like a lot to handle. If you've done this before, was the extra work really worth the improved uptime? Or maybe there's an easier way to get high availability that we're missing for what we need?
